Eric Patrick Clapton (born March 30, 1945) is an English rock and blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He is regarded as one of the most influential and important guitarists of all time. Clapton has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame three times: once as a solo artist, once as a member of the Yardbirds, and once as a member of Cream. Clapton's career began in the early 1960s, influenced by American blues artists like Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, and Freddie King. He joined the Yardbirds in 1963, leaving in 1965 after the band started moving towards a more pop-oriented sound. He then joined John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, cementing his reputation as a blues guitar virtuoso. His brief but influential stint with the Bluesbreakers was followed by the formation of Cream in 1966 with bassist Jack Bruce and drummer Ginger Baker. Cream was a pioneering band in the hard rock and blues-rock genres, known for their extended improvisations and powerful sound. After Cream's breakup in 1968, Clapton formed Blind Faith with Baker, Steve Winwood, and Ric Grech, but the band dissolved after only one album and a brief tour. In the early 1970s, Clapton embarked on a successful solo career. His self-titled debut album was released in 1970, followed by albums like 'Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs' (1970) with Derek and the Dominos, featuring the iconic song "Layla." Throughout his solo career, Clapton has explored various musical styles, including blues, rock, pop, and reggae. He has released numerous critically acclaimed and commercially successful albums, including '461 Ocean Boulevard' (1974), 'Slowhand' (1977), and 'Journeyman' (1989). Clapton's guitar playing is characterized by his distinctive tone, phrasing, and use of vibrato. He is known for his blues-based solos, his slide guitar playing, and his melodic songwriting. He has also struggled with personal issues, including drug and alcohol addiction. Clapton has been a vocal advocate for sobriety and has founded the Crossroads Centre, a rehabilitation facility in Antigua. He has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career, including multiple Grammy Awards, Brit Awards, and Ivor Novello Awards. His enduring influence on music and his contributions to the blues and rock genres have solidified his place as a true icon.
